The geometry, explained honestly
Conduit bending is applied trigonometry, whether or not anyone calls it that on the job. A few core relationships do most of the work.
- The offset. An offset steps the pipe over to a new plane using two equal bends. The angle you choose sets a multiplier — the number you multiply the offset height by to find the distance between your two bend marks. A shallower angle means a longer, gentler offset; a steeper one means a tighter step. Every offset also produces shrink, the amount the overall length of the pipe pulls in as it rises, which you have to account for or your end lands short.
- The saddle. A saddle carries the pipe over an obstruction and back down, either as a three-bend or a four-bend. It is really an offset and its mirror, sharing the same multiplier and shrink logic, with a center mark that has to sit exactly over the obstruction.
- The 90. The workhorse bend. The trick is the take-up — the distance from the end of the pipe to your bend mark that accounts for the radius of the bend itself, and which changes with the size of the conduit. Get take-up wrong and the stub comes up long or short every time.
None of this is exotic. But it involves multipliers, deductions, and take-ups that differ by angle and pipe size, and doing that arithmetic in your head, on a ladder, with the crew waiting, is exactly where errors creep in.
